lift the state moratorium on nuclear power plants and  repeal “clean car” rules. Said in news conference at State Capitol that…Minnesota needs to tap all energy sources–from carbon-free nuclear, solar and wind to fossil fuels to lower utility costs and increase reliability of the power grid.

Question: What’s your vision for managing climate issues related to agriculture?

“We need to separate weather from climate. We see weather happen all the time. We’re impressed with it, we’re impressed with this storm or that storm. Climate…we need to be careful. As scientists, we need to make certain that we’re not arrogant about what we think is happening, and we do that, especially I think in this country, because of the way we do science, the way we get it paid for, the way we get our research projects published, the way we get tenure. There’s a whole cycle that oftentimes calls for more confidence and arrogance than really the science shows. We’ve used this term, follow the science ad nauseum over the last couple years, but the fact is, I think there’s climate change, it’s gradual, it’s slow, and we have to be nimble…let’s really do infrastructure so all of our roads and bridges can stand up to the heavy rains and floods”

It will take a broad approach to climate change, Walz said, and farmers are going to be the ones to respond with carbon sequestration and growing alternative crops. He also said there needs to be a permanent drought relief program so it doesn’t get caught up in politics. “This is going to be a hungry, hotter, more disruptive world, but we can start to do things necessary that … insulate us from those things,” Walz said.

Minnesota governor candidates talk COVID, rural issues at Farmfest

“Minnesota can lead the way in addressing climate change in a way that supports new jobs, reduces pollution, and helps ensure our children have clean air to breath and clean water to drink“That’s why our Administration will work with private, non-profit, and government partners and Minnesotans to address climate change while creating jobs across the state… Transportation is the largest contributor to climate pollution in Minnesota and the United States. A Minnesota Clean Fuels Standard could reduce more than 50 percent of climate pollution from the transportation sector by 2050″

“Building on the bold action our Administration has taken already, this [climate change] subcabinet will help put our state at the forefront of finding solutions to climate change. Together, we can tackle climate change, create good-paying jobs, and pioneer the clean energy economy.”

It’s clear – climate change is an urgent and an existential threat. Our Local Jobs and Projects Plan invests $943.7 million to protect what we love most about living in Minnesota now and for future generations.
